EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT 6TH GRADE SCIENCE
My new favorite word is GRIT. Wikipedia says, "Grit in psychology is a positive, non-cognitive trait based on an individual's passion for a particular long-term goal or end state, coupled with a powerful motivation to achieve their respective objective." This year, I want to see your GRIT!

What will we learn this year?
Lab safety
I will have a lab safety contract that needs to be signed by both you and your parent/guardian before you will be allowed to participate in labs. Lab safety rules are reviewed throughout the year. You are expected to follow safety rules at all times!
Grades:
Please do:
- Ask questions! We will learn together this year! :)
- Practice the skills shown on the “Falcon Focus” posters around the school.
- Follow the 6th grade employability policy. (We'll talk more about this!)
- Borrow supplies if you need them.
- Let me know ahead of time if you will be absent.
- If you are absent, please make sure you find out what you miss!
- You have two days to make up work for each day you were gone. (Example: if you were gone five days, you have ten days to make up any work you missed. See page 4 of the middle school handbook for more information.)
- Wait for the opportune moment to sharpen your pencil, use the restroom, etc.
Please do not:
- Plagiarize your work. Plagiarism is when you use someone else's words or ideas and act like they are yours. The plagiarism policy states:
“All students who plagiarize will receive the following penalty: An essay, assignment, or project that shows evidence of plagiarism in any form will receive a failing grade with the distinct possibility of a zero.” (See page 7 of the middle school handbook.) - Bring food, gum, or any beverage other than water to class.
- Turn on the sinks without permission. (They are messy!)
- Sit at my desk or leave things on my desk.
- Use your cell phone during class. (If you have your phone with you, it needs to be off. I’d recommend keeping it in your locker!)
- The middle school cell phone policy states: “If the cell phone [goes] off during a class or is visible at any time without permission, the teacher will take the phone and the office will store it until the parents come to school to pick up the phone, no exceptions.” (See page 8 of the middle school handbook.)
How we roll:
- Come in, find your seat, and then:
- Look at the board to see if there’s anything you need to do right away!
- Check our 6th grade Google calendar to see what is coming up in class and what due dates you might have.
- Work on other homework or read (ALWAYS bring something to read!) while you wait patiently to see what's next.
- We have an online TechBook!
- Login here.
- Your username is [email protected]. Your password is the same as your Canvas password.
What will we learn this year?
- 1st trimester: Intro. to the Periodic Table, then Earth and space science
- 2nd trimester: life science
- 3rd trimester: physical science
